Friday, Aug 8 update

Anne remains unconscious. She has been off sedation for two days. If you are wondering if that means she is in a coma, the answer is yes. A coma is a deep state of prolonged unconsciousness. GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) is used to measure the depth of coma with 3 or 3T being the lowest and 15 being the highest (a fully awake, alert, conversant person). The total score is a combination of three component test scores: eye (1-4), verbal (1-5), and motor (1-6). Anne is 3T currently. The T means she is intubated and not capable of making verbal responses. In short, Anne has a long journey ahead. The doctors ordered an MRI which should hopefully be performed tonight and evaluated tomorrow. It will give a more detailed picture of what is happening in her brain than the CT scans.

Today we played Anne several more songs including “Inside Out” by Spoon and “Strawberry Letter 23” by The Brothers Johnson. I read Anne some more of your lovely cards.

    She may have a long journey, but she’ll have all of us right beside her and you. She’s off sedation and on her way!

    Thank you, Brent. Your updates make me feel hopeful. I have worked as a volunteer at Bryant library for 16 years. Long after my own grandkids graduated. The reason for that is your amazing wife, Anne. I admire her passion for helping young people love reading, analyzing what they read and question different ideas. I love the way she engages students with different voices that fit the characters as she reads to them. I love the way she cracks jokes even when she is correcting their behavior. Please tell her that I am pulling for her complete recovery. Stay strong. Please give my love and hugs to Kate. Let me know if I can be of any help to you and your family. Sincerely, Anita Bhat

    Oh my…. my dearest friend(s), I just can’t believe this is something that is being experienced by the loveliest of human(s). That phrase keeps coming to my mind, “why do bad things have to happen to such good people?!”
    Anne, I know you’re in there somewhere, in some very deep state, facing challenges that I can only imagine are deep and difficult. I am so sorry for this, my heart-friend… I buoyed by knowing how -strong, resilient and courageous, filled with fortitude… you are, -an amazing woman connected to so many other, amazing humans that love you!
    Your life is made rich by your presence, by your vigor for life! You fill every crevasse full with abundant care, concern and desire, too meet the need. That is what you do for us all and who are fortunate enough to be a part of your beautiful life, and that is what we hope to do for you now. Anne, you fill our cups with joy!
    But now, I am along all who know you are profoundly saddened that this is happening to you, “our” lovely lady of light.
    Last night, when I lit candles for you I prayed with all my heart that you are receiving the assistance by the non-physical spiritual beings as well.
    I reached out into the “force,” to speak with your mama, your brother, your dad, and my mom and sister who love you from their spaces.
    I asked them to do all they can do to assist you in this liminal space that you are in. I asked them to send help in the form of love, and strength to Kate and to Brent.
