Anne Aliverti (1968-2025)

Anne passed away on Thursday afternoon Aug 14 2025, 10 days after getting struck by a car in the crosswalk. It’s been the hardest and most painful 10 days for Kate and I, and grieving will continue for us, our family, her colleagues and community. Anne was a bright light with a huge community that loved her. She was an incredible wife and mother to our daughter and I still can’t believe she is gone.

Please allow time for grieving and making sense of something so senseless and preventable.

A celebration of Anne’s life will be held in on Saturday, October 18th from 1-3PM at Bryant Elementary Auditorium.

    Anne was a light and inspiration to me and many others who taught with her. I am so sad for her loved ones and the children who won’t meet her. We were librarians and loved the job, books and kids. A lucky time for me when we worked together. My heart is so heavy . Jean

    My heart breaks. I know your family’s heart is broken too, as you start this hard journey of finding a new normal without Anne. Even though she’s no longer with us physically, her spirit will forever live in our hearts, shining brightly in every life she touched. ❤️

    it was sad news to hear of Anne’s s passing today. Anne was a truly nice person, something that rare in this world. I had the privilege to know and work with her and I know she will be missed. my thoughts are with her family.

    Last night I dreamt that you, Kate, Anne, Ron & I were in my Aunt’s former house next to the grade school I attended (a landscape that pops up in my dreams a lot, for some reason). Anne was getting ready to leave. She was making a list of things that needed to be done in the school library; she wanted to make sure that everything was written down before she was gone. I could tell she was sad, but she was also very focused and organized. I hugged her, and didn’t want to let her out of my sight.You two must be so bewildered right now. It doesn’t make sense. I feel like there’s a big mistake that’s been made, and I’ve been trying to figure out a way to correct it.Today I suddenly remembered what you wrote about Anne’s gratitude, and realized how grateful I am that I knew her. Ron said she was a light bulb–she walked into a room, and it was brighter.I am so sorry. Love,Julia

    I am so very sorry for this tragic loss. I knew of Anne very anecdotally as “‘Mrs. Aliverti” the wonderful librarian at Bryant Elementary.

    When my now college-aged son was in first grade, he volunteered to participate during one of the many amazing author visits Anne set up for the kids. This was with the author of the “Splat the Cat” books and my son suggested an idea that the author/artist turned into a poster. My son was thrilled! I think initially he thought that he might be able to bring the poster home. Anne was so very kind–she explained that the poster was meant for all of the kids and adults who were at Bryant so that everyone could enjoy it, but she made sure to take a picture of my son standing near it and somehow got a copy made or emailed to us. Just a small example of her kindness, energy and empathy. I can say with certainty that she made every child she worked with feel special, and the echoes of her kindness, intelligence and encouragement will be felt for a very long time.

    Your family is in my thoughts, and I know your family and friends will lift you up with your shared memories of a very special person.

    I know it will take time to realize that Anne is no longer with us on this earthly plane, but I certainly believe that her spirit will still be with us. She has been such a bright light and a very dedicated student in my EnerQi Yoga classes for over a decade. Anne was so fun to have in class, and she also set such a great example for everyone, as she talked about how she applied the energy medicine practices in her daily life. For instance, she recently designed a spreadsheet (just for fun!) to make it easier to use the anti-jet-lag techniques we learned in class, and a group of us just used it when traveling to China.

    When I heard about Anne’s accident, her fellow yoga students and I decided to dedicate our morning “Wake-up” energy practices to Anne, so we could send her healing energy. The first morning I did this out on my deck, I had barely started when a hummingbird flew up and hovered near my head. I hadn’t seen a hummingbird in my backyard for a long time, so I knew it was a message having to do with Anne. As an animal totem, the meaning of Hummingbird is Joy. I believe the message was that Anne was going to a place of Joy, and that I should remember that Joy when I think of her.     Anne was our beloved daughter-in-law. Our hearts are broken, but at the same time, we are so full of gratitude for the joy that she brought to our family. Reading all the beautiful and comforting messages from so many of her friend, colleagues, and neighbors as well as parents of the children she taught is incredibly comforting and helpful as we come to terms with this overwhelming sense of loss. Anne was one of those rare people who truly gave far more than she took from this world. We love hearing how many lives she has touched. She made everyone feel fortunate to have known her. May we all find a way to set aside the pain and turn to our wonderful memories of our time with her. Because that is WHAT ANNE WOULD WANT.

    This has truly shaken me to my core. I know it’s been so long since I’ve seen you both, but I’ve loved seeing Ann through your social media and watching you two be such amazing parents to your beautiful daughter, Kate. My oldest is around the same age. She is so very lucky to have you as her dad—you are such an amazing person. I can’t fathom any of this. None of it makes sense, and it just makes me hate the world. I know Trevor loved her deeply, and I’m so grateful I had the chance to know you both. I’ll always remember your wedding like it was yesterday, doing her makeup and celebrating with you. And of course, when Trevor and I crashed your honeymoon in the San Juan Islands—ha! You were so kind to invite us along.     Dear Brent and Kate,

    I send my sincerest condolences to you both. As all are saying, Anne was a unique and precious person who lit up the world. The void she leaves behind will never be filled and our hearts will always have an empty space without her. I am so grateful for the years I worked with Anne and for the friendship we shared. I regret not staying in better touch with her since moving out of state, but I know that we always felt a closeness that was immediate when we did talk, text or Zoom.

    You are both in my thoughts and my heart through this devastating time.

    I’m so sad to hear this terrible news. I volunteered at the Bryant library years ago when my kids were there and Anne made it the best volunteer job. She was so kind, funny, and genuine. I ran into her at the grocery store not too long ago and we caught up on our kids. She was so proud of Kate. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

    Hi Brent,

    This is your former across-the-street neighbor on 92nd Street. I just learned the devastating news about Anne.

    Anne was such a warm and steady presence, always fully in the moment, always welcoming to others, always uplifting to be around. Those fortunate enough to know her will never forget her. I count myself among them.

    Thank you for sharing the story of your meeting and your love. It was truly a delight being neighbors with you.

    Anne was an amazing educator, and she influenced so many kids through the years. Kids who will go on to spread the love of learning and books that she instilled in them. Her influence continues and will continue to grow.

    I miss Anne’s smile, her energy, her thoughtfulness, and her wit.

    Dear Brent and Kate,

    Our family is devastated. Ms. Aliverti was a pivotal educator in all 3 of our kids’ Bryant experiences. I was fortunate to first get to know Anne better while chaperoning Maia and Kate’s 4th grade global reading challenge. We quickly moved beyond small talk, and I was excited to connect with her on a range of topics from medicine to politics. What a thrill for the kids to go on to win the finals, and I too emerged with a new friend!

    As the years passed on, we looked forward to Ms. Aliverti’s presence. I recall Anne in her reflective morning duty vest. She always made it a point to speak directly to Lily. Shy to speak to adults, Lily would bask in that simple good morning and soon she would be among her classmates, clamoring around Anne to be chosen to help pick up the playground trash with her special grabber. Maia and Lily prepared their youngest sister, Nila well. “Don’t forget your summer reading bingo! Get blackout and you get to go to that ice cream party!” They let Nila know how she comes from a long line of Shelf Elves, a responsibility Nila took seriously while also learning herself. Shelving graphic novels may be the best job, but also might mean getting submerged in a book and losing track of time!

    What a special cap to our family’s time at Bryant to find myself again chaperoning a global reading challenge trip to Central Library with Nila’s 5th grade team. Anne taught the team tips from her yoga teacher to channel their nervous and excited energy. Soon they were all tapping under their eyes between questions! You also could feel the palpable respect for Anne as she walked among the shush of librarians, where laughter and many conversations flowed. I saw Anne, the stalwart educator in action, helping our kids process that nail-biting, overtime loss. She modeled gratitude for each other as teammates and sportsmanship and respect for the winning team. At 5th grade graduation, Anne and I had a special moment to catch up for 11 years we have known each other.

    Kate, she was so excited to share about what you were getting involved in and how fiercely proud she was of you and the young adult you were becoming.

    Maia also wants to share that the library was her sanctuary in elementary school, made safe by the special presence of Ms. Aliverti. Maia recalls that Ms. Aliverti would walk around the library with her, recommending book after book to her, sometimes stretching the 10* book limit to accommodate Maia’s reading appetite. It set the tone for the positive warmth she feels for all librarians she meets. Maia will always hold a special place in her heart for Ms. Aliverti.

    We are ever so grateful for Anne’s lasting impact on our lives. Thank you for this space to share our memories. Our hearts are connected to your family.

    Anne was one of the most remarkable teachers I had in my K-12 education, as evidenced by the fact that I am in my 30s working as faculty at a major university and still find myself thinking about her and the Language Arts class I took with her at Eckstein Middle School (where I knew her, before the move to Bryant) almost anytime I have to write anything.

    I was absolutely devastated today when I looked her up to see if she was still at Bryant, just because I was thinking about her and wanted to check in–we hadn’t spoken since I started grad school in 2017–and found this page and the various articles about this senseless accident instead. I could not believe my eyes. I could not believe how much it hurt, two decades decade after that Language Arts class, at least a decade since the last time I would have seen her in person…

    Brent, my heart goes out to you and Kate (who surely doesn’t remember me, but I remember her!) and to the students and teachers and families at Bryant who are surely still trying to get used to the library without her. She undoubtedly left enormous shoes for them to fill. What a tragedy.
